The new year has shown lots of love for the liberal arts. Our 2023 January Term offered unique classes and global engagement opportunities for students. The University hosted the 23rd annual Ethics Bowl, presented by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC). The VFIC honored steadfast VWU and private college supporter George Birdsong H'16 at its annual Ethics Bowl Dinner. We commemorated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a "Weekend of Service" both out in the community and here on campus in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. The holiday culminated in a special keynote address from newly elected State Senator Aaron Rouse.

has, once again, been recognized among U.S. News & World Report's "Best Online Programs." We were inducted in the River Stars Hall of Fame by the Elizabeth River Project and "Inside Business." We announced the addition of a cheer program in VWU Athletics starting in fall 2023. We are excited to host "," an in-person LAN tournament for collegiate Rocket League esports programs later this month. VWU is celebrating 50 years of Title IX with a special presentation from Carol Hutchins, the winningest Division I softball coach of all time.

With so many great things happening on and off campus, we hope you're loving all the wonderful news coming out of Virginia Wesleyan even more this month.

The fourth chapter of the 2022-2023 President to President thought leadership series is now available online. In 鈥,鈥 University of Missouri鈥揝t. Louis Chancellor Kristin Sobolik, Ph.D., explores the importance of colleges working with local leaders to strengthen communities, better serve students, and achieve long-term goals. She shares practical strategies and explains how colleges can help address social issues, drive economic development, and ensure that students, alumni, and communities thrive.

This year's series, titled 鈥,鈥 examines how having a 鈥渨ell鈥濃痗ampus鈥痙epends on meaningful improvements to the lives and experiences of students, faculty, and staff. Each month, a new chapter authored by a college or university president is published online. These higher education experts delve into the various dimensions of a 鈥渨ell鈥 campus and share unique insights into how colleges can support today鈥檚 students. As the Executive Editor of the series, I hope you will find value in this series as we explore this topic over the course of 10 chapters.
Dr. Scott D. Miller is president of 麻花色情片. Respected as one of the most entrepreneurial higher education executives in America, he is in his 32nd year as a university president. Dr. Miller has dedicated his career to the opportunities available through education. He especially values the small, classical, liberal arts college environment that offers students personalized pathways to life and career success.

Previously, he was president of Bethany College (2007-2015), Wesley College (1997-2007), and Lincoln Memorial University (1991-1997). He was also Executive Vice President (1988-1991) and Vice President for Development (1984-1988) at Lincoln Memorial University and Director of College Relations and Alumni Affairs at Rio Grande College (now University) in Ohio. Read more.
